  • Beginning with the possibility that your engagement ring will need a size adjustment for the perfect fit, there are many potential care and maintenance circumstances that you should be aware of. From the proper cleaning methods to the precautions needed to avoid damaging your ring and diamond, we will cover many of them here. We hope that this, final, section will educate you with the best daily and long-term practices to maintain that beautiful brilliance you love.

    Re-sizing the engagement ring

Even when we do our best to get the ring size perfect the first time, it is possible that you will need to send it back to us for an adjustment. At Mint Diamonds, we offer complimentary ring resizing on all engagement rings during the first year. Simply contact us to arrange your free ring resizing.

In some cases, including rings with ornate bands or milgrain and eternity bands, a ring will not be able to be resized. In this case, we are happy to exchange your ring for another size within 30 days of purchase. It is important to note that should you opt for an exchange, your new ring may contain fewer or more gemstones, diamonds, or a reduction or increase in precious metal weight, which may cause an increase or decrease in the price.

    Professional Repairs and Maintenance

Ensure that your jewelry stays beautiful and is secure by having it professionally cleaned and inspected every six to twelve months. Regular service extends the life of your jewelry and prevents lost diamonds or color stones. We can check the prongs that hold the diamonds and colored stones and tighten them if needed, as well as safely and professionally clean and polish your jewelry.

    Caring for your Diamond

Although diamonds and precious metals are highly resilient objects, they will require some frequent care to maintain that brand new, pristine shine and dazzle. And a few daily habits will keep them looking brand new and prevent any damage from occurring. Here are some helpful tips:

    Center Stone Care

Loss is one of the biggest threats to our center stone, followed by the buildup of elements that leave it looking dull, dark and dirty. Here is what we recommend:

    • You can help prevent your setting from becoming loose by picking your ring up from the band, not the center stone. This will also protect it from the build up of natural oils and other elements transferred from our skin.
    • Take your ring off when applying lotions, sunscreen and other chemicals with your hands. These will leave a residue on your diamond that will make it look foggy over time.
    • Don’t sleep with your ring on. While we’re sleeping, some of us tend to twist and turn within the sheets, exposing our rings to the possibility of snags that can pull on the prongs and loosen them over time.

When to take your ring off

    • Housecleaning
    • Playing sports
    • Gardening
    • Swimming in the pool or ocean
    • Cooking
    • Putting on lotions, cosmetics or perfume

    Storage

Diamonds are capable of scratching each other and other jewelry items, so the best way to store them is in their own beautiful soft fabric lined pouch or in a separate jewelry box that protects them from any kind of damage. In addition to safeguarding your ring from scratches, consider storing your valuable jewelry in a secure and hidden place.

    Travel

If you are travelling to a place that you are not very familiar with, perhaps out of the country, and are not 100% certain that you won’t be a target for muggers or thieves, just leave your precious jewels safe at home. The temporary detachment anxiety you may feel far outweighs the potential of losing something that has irreplaceable sentimental value. If you do happen to find yourself wearing your precious jewelry in an uncomfortable situation, turn the stone into the center of your palm so only the band shows on the outside. And always remember to keep your valuable jewelry with you at all times while travelling, never leaving it in a checked bag or hotel room.

    Caring For Gold Jewelry

To keep your gold jewelry looking as good as new, simply abide by a few important measures:

    • To prevent scratches, store it in it’s original box, a soft cloth bag or fabric-lined jewelry box, and make sure it is not in contact with other items.
    • Clean it with mild soap and warm water, using a non-metallic, soft brush (like a toothbrush).
    • To retain gold’s luster, make sure to keep it away from harmful and corrosive chemicals such as bleach, ammonia and chlorine.
    • Never use paper towels or other abrasive materials when cleaning and drying your jewelry, only a lint-free, microfiber cloth.
    • Avoid wearing your ring during physical activity. When you wear your ring while exercising or during competitive sports, you risk damage.
    • Warning! Never remove your ring while washing your hands in public. Many rings have been lost or stolen in this way.

    Caring for Platinum Jewelry

Platinum has a beautiful and bright shine. To maintain its natural luster, follow these simple rules:

    • If platinum is worn daily, it may develop a slight sheen. Although most people prefer this look, you can always have jeweler polish platinum jewelry restore it to its original shine.
    • Warning! Never remove your ring while washing your hands in public. Many rings have been lost or stolen in this way.

How to clean your ring at home:

    • With a small drop of washing up liquid, gently scrub your ring with a soft clean toothbrush.
    • Rinse your ring under warm water and gently scrub again to remove any soap residue.
    • Dry with a lint-free, microfiber cloth.
    • Ideally, clean your ring every couple of weeks and have it cleaned professionally every three to six months.
